Norwich Medico-Chirurgical society was formed in 1867 and is one of the oldest Medical Societies in the country.
Guest speakers are arranged most months and all are welcome – you do not need to be a member to attend.
The Society also encourages research, supports medical students and hosts a range of social events.
The Norfolk and Norwich and Jenny Lind Children’s Hospitals attracted some illustrious surgeons and physicians to practice in Norwich during the 19th century when Med Chi was first established. Since then we have reached out across East Anglia to welcome members and with the beginning of the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group we welcome members from all the Group Hospitals to join us.
Whilst the way we as a profession keep up to date has changed beyond recognition, every year a Programme of Events is arranged by the Society President of that year. The President may be from Primary Care or Secondary Care so the subjects covered are eclectic but include advances and changes in medical care, but also provides us with insight into the arts, other sciences and non medical speakers on local or national topics.
Hopefully, the broad appeal of each Programme is a way for our Society to continue the essential links between primary and secondary care. It is one of the few remaining occasions when we can meet colleagues, where geography, shifts and work pressures have eroded other opportunities outside of work.
Please do feel welcome to attend meetings and bring younger colleagues along as well. You do not have to be a member and you do not have to be a consultant or even a doctor. We encourage non-medical staff to attend as well. Medical students and retired professionals are equally welcome.
Medical Societies are dwindling in number as medical communities chat more online, however we hope that the Norwich Med Chi will remain a regular opportunity for meeting in person.
